Brief Summary of Protocol:
The overall goal of this project is to identity genes which are responsible for the development of obesity and its related health risks, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and blood lipid abnormalities.



Detailed Description of Protocol:
Participants will meet with a member of the Kosraen Health department and complete a medical, family and dietary questionnaire.

A brief physical exam will be performed including: hip, waist, weight, height, blood pressure, and fat percentage measurements.

Blood will be drawn intravenously for blood glucose levels and labs.



What specifically makes a person eligible for the study?
You may be eligible to enter this study:

All individuals over 16 years of age on the Island of Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia.

Children permitted to participate:
No

Potential Benefits.....
The potential benefits include early diagnosis of diabetes and or heart disease in a number of patients, and the opportunity for risk reduction for these disorders through educational means. There is also the possibility that this study may ultimately lead to improved treatment for these complex disorders.



Compensation:
No compensation will be provided for participation in this research study.

However, participants will be offered free screening tests, advice regarding risk factors for diabetes, hypertension heart disease and their modification.
