Brief Summary of Protocol:
Chronic inflammation can be a result of several diseases and conditions. Although scientists know that inflammation plays a key role in many illnesses, what drives inflammation in the first place is still a mystery. One effect of inflammation is to activate proteins in the blood and we would like to measure the effect of inflammation on a specific group of proteins in the blood called the "contact system". By understanding how these proteins become activated in different diseases, we may be able to better apply treatments aimed at slowing or stopping their activation and reduce inflammation.



Detailed Description of Protocol:
As a volunteer in this study, you will be asked to provide a blood sample at least every three months for two years. Some volunteers will be given the option of donating blood two times during the first week. This sub-study will provide information on the variation of concentration of proteins that are part of the “contact system” over a period of a few days. Participants with an inflammatory disease will be given the option of making an extra blood donation of 3ml (1 teaspoon) if they experience a “flare” or worsening in the status of their disease. At each three month visit around 40ml or three tablespoons of blood will be obtained.



What specifically makes a person eligible for the study?
You may be eligible to enter this study:

- Are between the ages of 18 and 75
- Healthy and in good general health OR
- Have a diagnosis of either of the following diseases:
o Diabetes (type I or II) o Chronic kidney disease o Rheumatoid arthritis o Multiple sclerosis o Inflammatory bowel disease
- Do not have HIV or Hepatitis C
