Brief Summary of Protocol:
If you join the research study, you will take part for about 5 to 15 minutes. The research study as a whole will last about 10 years.

The physicians at the Rockefeller University Hospital are engaged in research on the nature, diagnosis and treatment of disease. You have been informed that this study involves research and that the purpose is to study viral and host factors involved in the transmission and pathogenesis of HIV infection.

The reason for doing this research is to study viral and host factors involved in the transmission and pathogenesis of HIV infection.

We are asking you to take part in this research study because you are or may have been infected with the virus that causes HIV infection. Blood will be drawn to determine this possibility, and to assist in defining diagnosis, or prognosis, or clinical management.

Detailed Description of Protocol:
The procedures to be followed are: Blood will be withdrawn from an arm vein using routine sterile procedures. The amount of blood taken (1-4 tabespoons {10-40 ml}) should be small enough not to cause symptoms from the loss of blood. This blood draw may be performed either at Rockefeller University Hospital, or at Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center.

The Investigators are seeking your permission to perform one, two or all three of the studies listed below, on serum and/or white blood cells collected from your visit to Rockefeller University Hospital or the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, to better understand host factors in HIV transmission and pathogenesis. You will receive a copy of all the tests performed. You may or may not give consent to the following:

· T cell subset enumeration

· Serologic reactivity with HIV antigens

· Viral load assays by bDNA, PCR, or RT-PCR

A licensed laboratory will perform laboratory tests during the research study. We will tell you test results that may affect your health. During the research study, you will not receive routine care for your underlying medical condition.

What specifically makes a person eligible for the study?
You may be eligible to enter this study:

18 years of age or older
Newly infected with HIV OR
at high risk for the virus that causes HIV infection

Gender:
Both

Age(s):
16 years and older

Children permitted to participate:
No

Potential Benefits.....
All tests will be provided at no cost to you or your insurance company, and results will be given to you.

Compensation:
There is no cost to you for being in this research study. You will not be paid for your participation in this study.
